The annual Speak Cornish Week is fast approaching and we’d love you to get involved! Run by An Rosweyth, the network of Cornish language voluntary organisations, under our Speak Cornish banner, Speak Cornish Week is one of the biggest Cornish language events in the calendar.
It’s open to all, from those who have never uttered a word of Cornish before, to current learners and fluent speakers. The aim is to get everyone using some Cornish and to make the language heard online and in towns, villages, shops and pubs across Cornwall.
Our theme this year is ‘A warm Cornish welcome’ (using Dydh da, Lowena dhis, Wolkom os and lots of other welcoming words). There will be a programme of events throughout the week, which will be available via our website. There will be opportunities to learn Cornish online or in person, to speak Cornish with others and for all the brilliant things going on involving the language to be showcased.
As a council, business, charity, community group or organisation based in Cornwall we would love you to be a part of Speak Cornish Week 24. Perhaps you could use ‘Dydh da’ in your interactions during Speak Cornish Week (and beyond)? We will be posting on social media all week. We would love to see content from you, be that messages, video clips, photos, memes, or whatever you decide to do! We have provided some relevant Cornish language phrases below but if there are further translations that you need, please contact the Cornish Language Office on https://www.cornwall.gov.uk/parks-leisure-and-culture/the-cornish-language/cornish-language-programme/online-translation-request-service/.
Want to go a step further and hold a Cornish language themed event? Then please let us know so that we can add it to our programme of events for the week. And for councils, how about starting the conversation to adopt a Cornish language policy (we have a draft policy which you can alter to meet your needs).
